Duck Interesting Facts

- Ducks sleep with half of their brains awake. Ducks are more likely to sleep with one eye open when they are located on the edge of sleeping groups. They can detect predators in less than a second.
- A duck’s quack doesn’t echo, nobody knows the reason why.
- Ducks can live 20 or more years with good care and feeding. The world’s record is held by a Mallard Drake that lived 27 years.
- A clutch is the total number of eggs laid by one bird during one nesting session. Clutch size is affected by hereditary and environmental factors. When food is abundant, birds lay more eggs. A brood is the total number of hatchlings, or ducklings in a clutch.
- Mallards are able to take flight from the water almost vertically. With one strong swoosh of their wings, the duck’s body is lifted clear out of the water. They quickly go into full flight.
- Duck eggshells have tiny holes (pores) that allow it to breathe. A hen’s eggs can have 7500 pores, most found at the blunt end of the egg. Respiratory gasses as well as water vapor travel through these pores allowing the egg to breathe.
- Baby ducks are precocial, meaning they are born with their eyes wide open, with a warm layer of down, and are not fully dependant on their parents for food. Ducklings are ready to leave the nest within hours of hatching.
- Mallard Ducks usually have the longest migration of any duck, extending from late summer to early winter. They usually begin their migration back to the breeding grounds in March and April.
Hunting Dogs Reviews

- A girl duck, or hen, makes a loud quack sound while the boy duck, or drake, has a raspy, muffled call.
- The Mallard Duck is the most common wild duck in the USA. The current breeding population is estimated to be almost 10 million.
- Mallards can rise “straight up” 30-36 feet if its necessary to clear tree tops. Once the duck is in flight they can reach speeds of up to 70 feet per second.
- Female ducks show a strong tendency to breed near the place they were hatched, or near a previous breeding site.
- Around 95% of duck meat consumed in the USA is Pekin duck.
- The American Black Duck is not black, but only appears so at a distance; it was formerly known as the “Dusky Duck.” They return to the same marshes each fall, and will starve rather than migrate farther south if those marshes are frozen.
- The colors of the bill and legs are used to determine their age and sex. These differences led to an earlier belief that there were two subspecies, a northern, red-legged race, and a southern “common” one.
- If a mother is killed or separated from her brood, another Black Duck with ducklings of her own, regardless of their age, will quickly adopt the orphans.
