Review :
This weapon is widely used by law enforcements as a defensive weapon and of course, by hunters for hunting activities but it can also be used for self-defense. This particular Remington was the 4 th major design in a successful series of Remington pump shotguns. A man named John Pedersen created the very fragile Model 10 (later on, the improved model 29). Working along with John Browning, John Pedersen created the model 17 which set the fundamentals for the Remington 31 which was an efficient shotgun but wasn’t very successful in terms of sales due to the existence of the Winchester Model 12. In 1950, Remington solved this issue by introducing a modern, reliable and rugged shotgun, the 870 which came at a more than affordable price.
Regarding its design, the 870 features a bottom loading, a side-ejecting receiver, a tubular magazine under the barrel, dual action bars, an internal hammer and a bolt which locks into an extension in the barrel. There are some components that resemble with the Remington Model 7600, these are: the action, the receiver, the trigger system, the safety catch and also the slide release catch.
There are many versions of the 870 which can be grouped into:
Wingmaster – a very high-end sporting line that offers a glossy wood finish and polished bluing;
Express – these are the low-cost entry-level series that have a bead blasted finish and satin wood/synthetic furniture. Created to meet a price point the commercial market that is why it was made in a rather inexpensive matter in comparison with the 870 Police or Wingmaster models;
Marine – these have synthetic stocks and nickel finishes. They were designed to offer maximum corrosion resistance;
Police – this was designed in a more expensive matter that had a great impact in the final price, but it was a more durable firearm. This weapon was intended for the law enforcements and for the military markets. The weapon is available with parkerized finish and satin wood/synthetic stock;
Tactical – designed for the private sector market and like the Express models it was built in an inexpensive matter. Some of its features include:
• 18” or 20” barrel
• Improved cylinder and recoil pads to absorb impact
• Eight-round capacity with 2 or 3 round extensions available
• 3 additional stock options
• All black in color
MCS – also known as the Modular Combat Shotgun, it was designed to be rapidly modified to suit the needs of the tactical user. The MCS can be configured into 5 different formats, as follows:
• Entry Gun with a 14″ barrel and a 5-shot magazine
• Breacher tool with a 10″ barrel, pistol grip, and no buttstock
• Accessory Weapon with mount to be mounted under a M16 rifle like a KAC Masterkey
• Entry Gun with a 14″ barrel and a 5-shot magazine
• Vehicle Support Weapon with a 10″ barrel and a 3-shot magazine
